PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to use PDF Metadata

Last reviewed

Inspect document-level PDF metadata before sharing a file, then download a separate copy with supported identity and software fields cleared. The tool works locally and does not claim to redact visible text, annotations or hidden page content.

When this tool helps

  • Check whether a PDF exposes an author or document title
  • Review creation, modification, creator and producer fields
  • Create a cleaner copy before sending a document outside your organization

How to use it

  1. Choose one PDF from your device
  2. Review the grouped Document, Identity, Dates and Software fields
  3. Download a clean copy with supported metadata fields removed
  4. Open and inspect the clean copy before sharing it

Removing an author name

Input
A PDF whose Author field contains a personal name
Result
A new PDF copy with the supported document metadata fields cleared

The source remains unchanged. Metadata removal is separate from visual redaction and does not remove names printed on a page.

Limits and assumptions

  • Each PDF is limited to 100 MB and 500 pages
  • The tool clears supported document-level fields, not every possible embedded object or annotation
  • Metadata removal does not redact visible content or guarantee document anonymity

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF uploaded for inspection?

No. Metadata is read and the clean copy is created locally in your browser.

Which fields are inspected?

The inspector shows page count, title, author, subject, keywords, creation and modification dates, creator and producer when available.

Is removing metadata the same as redacting a PDF?

No. Redaction removes visible or underlying page content. This tool only clears supported document metadata fields.
