PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to use Image Resize

Last reviewed

Resize an image to exact pixel dimensions in the browser. Resizing changes the pixel grid; it is different from compression, which primarily changes how those pixels are encoded.

When this tool helps

  • Create a correctly sized website image
  • Reduce dimensions before compression
  • Prepare a fixed-size upload while keeping the source local

How to use it

  1. Select an image
  2. Enter the target width and height
  3. Resize and inspect the preview
  4. Download the result and retain the original

Half-size export

Input
A 2400 x 1600 image resized to 1200 px wide
Result
1200 x 800 when the original ratio is preserved

Halving both dimensions produces one quarter of the original pixel count.

Formula: when aspect ratio is preserved: target height = source height x target width / source width

Limits and assumptions

  • Upscaling cannot recreate missing detail
  • Exact width and height can distort an image when ratios differ
  • Decoded images are limited by browser memory

Frequently asked questions

Does resizing reduce file size?

Usually, because fewer pixels are encoded, but format and quality also affect the final bytes.

Can I make a small image sharper by enlarging it?

No. Enlargement interpolates pixels but does not recover original detail.

Where is my image processed?

The browser decodes, draws and exports it locally.
